How does it work?
A solar hot water system uses the sun's energy to heat a solar panel collector. This panel is filled with water which then transfers that heat (or hot water) into your home's hot water tank.

(1) A controller activates the pumps when adequate heat is ready to be transferred
(2) Heated water is then circulated
(3) A heat exchanger transfers the water to the storage tank
(5) The water is then pumped back to the collector to once again be reheated. This circulation loop will continue as long as there is heat to be drawn from the collector. During times when there is little or no sun, a backup heating system will be activated to provide adequate hot water.

There are two types of active solar water heating systems:

Direct circulation systems
Pumps circulate household water through the collectors and into the home. They work well in climates where it rarely freezes.

Indirect circulation systems
Pumps circulate a non-freezing, heat transferred through the collectors and a heat exchanger. This heats the water that then flows into the home. They are popular in climates prone to freezing temperatures.

After installation, properly maintaining your system will keep it running smoothly. Regular maintenance on simple systems can be as infrequent as every 3–5 years.
